Submitted by the Plainfield Fire Protection District:
The Plainfield Fire Protection District urges everyone to be careful if you use fireworks to celebrate the Independence Day holiday.  Every year emergency rooms treat people that are injured by fireworks.  Injuries to the hands, fingers, head, face, eyes and ears are the most common fireworks related injuries.  More than half of all injuries are burns.
Fireworks classified as “novelty fireworks” are allowed in Illinois and include sparklers, snake or glow worm pellets, smoke devices, trick noisemakers like party poppers and toy pistols or similar devices that use plastic or paper caps.  Sparklers burn at 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, a lit sparkler can cause a serious burn, and can also set clothing, decks, grass and mulch on fire.  Don’t run around with lit sparklers and do not use them while standing on a wooden deck or other combustible material.  Always have a bucket of sand available to dispose of used sparklers.  If your clothing catches on fire, stop, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll over and over to smother the flames and put the fire out.  Keep a charged garden hose nearby to extinguish any small fire that could develop in grass or mulch.
The fireworks classified as “consumer fireworks” that are illegal in Illinois include hand held fireworks, bottle rockets, firecrackers of any size or type, sky rockets, roman candles, chasers, buzz bombs, most ground items, helicopters, missiles, pin wheels or any other twirling device whether on the ground or mounted above the ground, planes and sky Lanterns, the type of balloon which requires fire underneath to propel it.
For more fire and life safety information, please call the Plainfield Fire Protection District at 815-436-5335 ext 7314.  You may also visit us on the web at www.plainfieldfpd.com.  The Plainfield Fire Protection District wishes everyone a safe and happy Independence Day Holiday.

Plainfield Cops Start July 4th Crackdown

Plainfield Cops Start July 4th Crackdown

patch
Plainfield Patch
From Plainfield Police Department

The Plainfield Police Department today announced plans for July 4th traffic enforcement, focusing on both drunk and unbuckled drivers.
The intensified enforcement effort will focus on late night hours as statistics show a disproportionate number of traffic deaths occur late at night and involve a drunk driver and/or unbuckled motorist. The crackdown is part of the statewide, Independence Day Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket effort.
Summer is in full force, and so is the summer travel season. All too often, that means more traffic and more traffic crashes and Independence Day can be one of the deadliest summer travel times. Too many people die each year due to those who choose to drive after drinking, so officers will be out in full force this Independence Day showing zero tolerance for drunk drivers and belt law violators.
Plainfield Police will join the Illinois State Police and hundreds of police and sheriff’s departments in a statewide enforcement effort that begins June 23rd and runs through July 6th.
To avoid a potential crash or drunk driving arrest, you should designate a sober driver and not let friends or family members drive drunk. Other important tips include:
  • Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys;
  • If you are drunk, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely;
  • Promptly report drunk drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911;
  • Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. It is your best defense against a drunk driver.
The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through IDOT’s Division of Traffic Safety. The crackdown runs concurrently with a media campaign that reminds motorists, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket.”

Workforce Services’ clothes closet needs refilling

Workforce Services’ clothes closet needs refilling

Plainfield Patch
     JOLIET – Ever look into your closet and bemoan that you’ve “got nothing to wear?” Imagine looking into an almost-empty closet and knowing there was nothing there to wear for a job interview or to go to work.
    For some job seekers, that’s the reality. With help from those who have enough to share, there is a way to help them get back in the workforce confident about what they’re wearing.
     Will County’s Workforce Services Division is looking for donations to restock its Clothes4Work clothing closet.
     “Helping each other is what good neighbors do,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “And
 Will County residents are especially good about helping out wherever they can. Now is a time when many people are going through their closets as part of spring cleaning. Hopefully, they’ll remember Clothes4Work if they have suitable attire that they no longer want.”
     Currently, the clothes closet is in need of the following items:
     For women, black and gray dress pants and dress blouses, both long- and short-sleeved, in basic colors;
     For men, long- or short-sleeved button-down dress shirts, especially white, dress shoes and belts.
    WSD Administrative Manager Susan Flessner said about 15 to 20 people visit the clothes closet each month. Most are looking for something to wear to interviews, but some also need something to wear for a new job. The clothes are at no cost to those who need them.
     No appointments are necessary to visit the clothes closet. It is available during regular working hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays.
     Flessner said donations can be brought to the WSD offices on the fourth floor of the JJC City Center Campus building at 214 N. Ottawa St. She said pickup can be arranged at an office or business which holds a clothing drive for the closet.
    Call (815) 723-3870 with questions about Clothes4Work.
    For more information about the Workforce Services Division of Will County, go to www.jobs4people.com.  WSD is under the County Executive’s office.
